Mary Adam was born in Ireland and trained in medicine. She has been living in Trinidad since 1973 and started painting and drawing in 1975. In the late 1970s her work was shown at several Trinidad Art Society annual exhibitions.
Largely self-taught, she had a joint showing of her work at Horizons Art Gallery, Port of Spain, Trinidad in September 2002 and a solo show entitled “A Matter of Form” at the same gallery, in April 2004. She has shown in numerous group exhibitions.
She received awards for painting from the Trinidad Art Society at their Annual Exhibitions in November 2000 and 2003.
Two of Mary's pieces form part of the corporate collection of British Petroleum (BP) Trinidad and Tobago. Her work is also in many private collections in Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
While my work deals with traditional subjects such as landscape, portraits and still life, I strive to express the essence or character of a thing as I see it.
My hope is that the viewer will have an experience in front of the work: whether it is simply a feeling of space and distance in a landscape, or a feeling of the weight or texture of an object in a still life, or some more complex feeling that can't be put into words; and that the viewer will get some sort of pleasure or enjoyment or entertainment from visiting the show.
