Xenia Mejía’s work references many themes linked to today’s reality: poverty, hunger, and the effects of natural disasters. It also reflects stories of personal tragedies, such as the domestic abuse of women. Her work is forceful. She is able to summarize in an open and direct way, the reality of her country within her Latin American surrounding, experiences and challenges. Her work does not allow comprise, it is precise and honest. She is known as one of Central America’s most remarkable artists to depict the subject of “womanhood”.
Her style is painterly, using graphic marks made with India ink, collage, and pencil. Mejía’s painting approach contrasts her subject matter. The use of delicate marks and media is opposed to the violent themes she portrays. The strength of her marks gives her art a unique expressionistic signature.
Xenia Mejía has had vast international experience, participating in prestigious exhibitions with recent residences in Vermont and Taiwan. Her work forms part of the collection of the Fine Art Museum in Taipei, Taiwan.
