Spence Gallery showcases emerging Latin artists at the Affordable Art Fair
New York September 22 – 25, 2011, Booth F-3

Spence Gallery is proud to announce that we will be exhibiting at the Fall Edition of the Affordable Art Fair NYC from September 22 – 25, 2011 at 7 West 34th Street. We will feature three key artists:

Jesus Mora is a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow. His journey to this illustrious award began in 1995 when he studied drawing and painting in Mexico. He has since pursued further formal fine arts certification at the Toronto School of Art and Ontario College of Art and Design and participated in several exhibitions, art projects, festivals and workshops. "My work is a reflection of my indigenous ancestry in fusion with my Spanish background. I fuse classical concepts as well as traditional techniques using undefined figures that are inspired from European old masters as well as Mayas and Aztecs iconographies."

Originally from Bolivia, Marcelo Suaznabar has exhibited extensively internationally. Since 2008 he has been featured in four museum exhibits in Mexico. He has received awards and distinction in the art circle in both Bolivia and Canada. A book chronicling the career of the artist was published in 2011. Suaznabar comments on his surreal paintings "In my work I introduce symbolic elements in an allegorical way. In this fashion, I interpret the temptations and passions of the soul in dreams. Often I inlay subtle figures in abstract backgrounds. These figures appear suspended in a direct and simple manner inviting interpretations of surreal and magical situations. My inspiration comes from nature, common attitudes of the human race and culture."

Since emigrating to Canada from Honduras at age seventeen, Nahum Flores has persistently pursued his career as an artist. A graduate from Ontario College of Art and Design, he has exhibited in Canada, the US and Latin America and received awards and recognition in both Toronto and Honduras. Flores creates layered pieces that present a narrative with sensitivity and humour. "My mixed media work is a fusion of drawing and matter intuitively processed. Employing a variety of materials including acrylic painting, collage, gel medium, and transfers, I create textures, expressive images, forms, and environments that give voice to my subconscious."

These artists exemplify a new brand of Canadian artist utilizing elements of the artistic tradition of their Latin culture of origin to create contemporary art with universal appeal.

Also included in the Spence Gallery collection at the AAF are artists: Ilyana Martinez, Ivan Ortiz, Izzeldinn Kojour and Opal Dunbar Adams. Click here to read information about Spence Gallery at the AAF.
