Solo Exhibit of Nahum Flores GEOLOGIES opens on Friday, September 25

With over 40 solo and group shows throughout his career, Nahum Flores’ new exhibition, Geologies, will continue his discourse about the human condition and the environment. Geologies serve as metaphor for Flores’ layered, mixed media work on canvas and wood panels where multiple layers of material coincide.

Since immigrating to Canada at the age of 17, Flores has conscientiously pursued his art, to growing acclaim. In a recent group show at the Katzen Art Centre of American University Museum in Washington, he sold out. His artist collective (Z’otz) has been recognized for its ingenuity and received honourable mention at the Toronto Outdoor Art show in 2006 and 2007. He received the Corporate Purchase Award at the Artist Project Fair in 2008. In 2006, he was one of six artists chosen to represent Honduras at the Central American Biennale.

Flores brings an intelligence to his art that is refreshing; it engages rather than alienates his audience. With sensitivity and humour, he presents a point of view that is deeply influenced by the turmoil he knew growing up in Latin America in the troubled 1970s.

The environments Flores depicts are spaces in which amorphous beings emerge. His layering of material helps create a sense of history, intimating pasts and beliefs that lie buried beneath new realities.

Flores uses layers of water-based and organic materials, such as acrylic paint, gel medium, acrylic polymer, sand, ink, organic pigments, transfer and pencil in the construction of his pieces. The compositions develop through the interaction among these materials. The result is a fusion of colours, rich textures and forms that lure the mind, serving up new ideas and questions.

Nahum Flores will be present for the opening reception on Friday, September 25, 6 – 9 p.m. where more than twenty large and small scale new works will be unveiled. See www.spencegallery.com for more information.
