Spence Gallery is pleased to present a collection of over 10 large format paintings and several smaller works by Marcelo Suaznabar. The exhibition will take place in conjunction with the launch of a hard cover 136 page book that chronicles sixteen years of the artist’s career. It follows Suaznabar from his birthplace in the high plains of Bolivia to his migration to Canada in 2001 and his progression to wide recognition and museum exhibits.
By documenting Suaznabar’s paintings in three series, the book illustrates the evolution of the surreal, symbolism and colour in his work over the years. From an early age he has been luring the imagination of his audience into a magical world using themes of time, death, fear and our relationship with the environment.
Suaznabar exemplifies a new brand of Canadian artist utilizing elements of the artistic tradition of his culture of origin to create contemporary art with a universal appeal. As a prolific artist, he has exhibited extensively in Latin America, Canada, the United States and Europe. Since 2008 he has had three exhibits in public museums in Mexico – Monterrey, Leon and Guadalajara. Suaznabar’s work can be found in public museum collections in Latin America as well as corporate and private collections around the world.
A series of events will mark this significant milestone in the artist’s career. The exhibition will be available for a preview on Friday, February 25, 6-9 p.m. The opening reception is on Saturday, February 26, 6-9 p.m. An Artist Talk will mark the closing of the exhibition on Sunday, March 20, starting at 3 p.m. The artist will be present at all events and available for signing books. The book is available at the Spence Gallery and is priced at $30.
