Marcelo Suaznábar will present a solo exhibit at the Spence Gallery from January 18 to 31, 2008.
Originally from Oruro, Bolivia, at an early age Suaznábar developed as an artist and has created a wealth of work that hangs in museums across Latin America and corporate and private collections around the world. Suaznábar has remained prolific since settling in Canada in 2001 which has increased his exposure to a North American audience. His success here will soon match is that in Latin America.
Suaznábar allows his imagination and yours to roam freely against the backdrop of the Andean landscape. Surreal elements abound in his work. He interweaves familiar and unfamiliar figures and symbols in a dreamlike atmosphere that makes us aware of our inner tensions. His figures often appear suspended in a manner that invites interpretations of surreal and magical situations. A trademark of his work is that he finishes his smaller works with a layer of resin that creates another dimension and increases the appeal for collectors.
Suaznábar has exhibited extensively in Latin America, Europe, Canada and the US with 17 solo exhibits and over 80 group shows including participating in the 1999 Biennial in Brazil. In 2006 Suaznábar had a successful showing at the Toronto International Art Fair. He is referenced in books about Latin American art and in 2008 a book titled An Andean Renaissance Man in the Midst of the XXI Century that explores the development of his work over 18 years will be published.
For those who have not yet discovered the magical world of Marcelo Suaznábar, this 10 day exhibit is an opportunity to acquire pieces priced from $500 to $6,000.
The artist will be present at the opening wine and cheese reception on Friday January 18th starting at 6:00 p.m. There will be a live auction of the artist's sketches on opening night.
