Three artists of Latin origin will exhibit at Spence Gallery presenting pieces with elements of the surreal. All three artists share a concern for the environment and represent this to varying degrees in their work.
Marcelo Suaznabar presents the temptations and passions of the soul in dreams. His figures often appear suspended in a direct and simple manner inviting interpretations of surreal and magical situations. (In early 2007, a book titled An Andean Renaissance Man in the Midst of the XXI Century is being published about the work of Marcelo will be released.
Nahum Flores' mixed media work is a fusion of drawing and matter intuitively processed on canvas and wood panels. Although infused with humour, his work reflects his concern for the human condition and the devastation of natural environments.
Oswaldo De Leon Kantule is an Indigenous artist from Panama. While the symbolism and iconography that he uses is specific to his Kuna People, some themes and concepts are similar to those that appear in Canadian native art.
For Suaznabar and Flores, this exhibit immediately follows their successful showing at the 2006 Toronto International Art Fair. Both these artists will be present at the opening reception. De Leon Kantule is currently exhibiting in Lyon, France and therefore will not attend the opening.
