I draw inspiration from my background and childhood. Beauty, strength, colour, diversity - these are the things that inspire me. I see all of these qualities in the eyes and on the faces of women. Being raised primarily in a single parent household, led by a strong Black woman, I have come to appreciate the struggles that women must overcome everyday. I hope to portray the stories of triumph, hope and love through my portraits.
— Opal Dunbar-Adams

Opal Dunbar-Adams was born in Montreal, Quebec and later moved to Ottawa. She explored her passion for art through a variety of mediums. She focused her talents first, at the Ottawa School of Art (1997 – 1999) and later gained new insights and experiences at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1999 – 2001).

She currently works from her home studio in Pickering, Ontario. Opal created the artwork for The Monument by Colleen Wagner that will be presented by The Obsidian Theatre Company in March 2006.
